Question
#3 Explain what the Mystery Writing Experiment was about in your Book Creator App Learning Log (see example in Google Classroom) research and define the following words: Solute, Solvent, Solution, Dilute and Concentrated in your answer.

Answer
The mystery writing experiment involved using a solute (baking soda) and the universal solvent (water). A solution is a homogeneous (same throughout) mixture of one or more substances (solutes) dispersed molecularly in a sufficient quantity of dissolving medium (solvent) In a solution, the solvent is the substance that dissolves a solute and makes up the largest percentage of a solution. In our experiment, we had to decide whether we wanted to compare our test solution (1/2 tsp. powder in 1 Tablespoon of water) with a more dilute or more concentrated solution. To make a dilute solution, we must add more solvent than our test solution had. To create a more concentrated solution we added less solvent to the solute. We noticed that both solutions we used change the color of the turmeric paper from goldenrod to red. The base (baking soda) caused the acid/base indicator (turmeric) to change color from goldenrod to red. Turmeric is used as a food color and as a spice or flavor enhancer. Turmeric is one of the principle ingredients in curry powder. The active ingredient in turmeric is a chemical compound known as curcumin.
